september 21st. >> mike thomas and erin como talking the roads and our weather so let's get the headlines, folks. >> you already hit the nail on the head. beautiful afternoon coming up, sunny and bright skies and temperatures feeling summer-like in the mid to upper 80's. erin. >> i'm going to get a pool day in. barricade situation in anne arrundel. we'll check in with some construction zones. >> sounds good both of you. thank you. right now if you're just waking up at the top of the hour these are the top stories. we'll begin with breaking news. there's a barricade situation under way right now in anne arrundel county, maryland. it stems from a shooting last night in annapolis. that's the video you're seeing on your screen right now. a man and a woman were shot on medgar evers street in annapolis just before 8:00 p.m. police then responded more than two hours later to the 700 block of central avenue in edgewater to look for a person of interest in that shooting. that person barricaded himself in a home there. we have a crew headed to the scene

we get it. >> right now at 5:01, people on the island of the dominican republic turks and caicos are bracing for impact. hurricane maria is barreling towards the dominican republic with category three storm strength. it is expected to hit the island today. turks and caicos will see the brunt of maria tomorrow. yesterday maria ravaged the island of puerto rico. there are mass power outages flooding and mudslides are a major concern. in dominica officials say the hurricane killed several people. >> the local elite team that that responds to disaster is already lending a helping hand. the fairfax county urban search and rescue team is in puerto rico. they tweeted out this video yesterday of the crew helping clear a tree outside their base of operations there in san juan. >> in the meantime the maryland task force one team will also be helping with hurricane relief efforts. the 27 member team based in montgomery county will leave from fema's deployment center at dover air force base later today. they'll find out where they're being deployed to when they ar

wherever that might be they say their bags are packed and they are ready to go. >> they are ready to go, again ready to help another community in need. we don't know if that's puerto rico or the usvi or another community along the east coast. as maria changes course like irma did, it very possibly could be an outer banks issue in the coming days. >> maryland task force one is one of 28 different fema teams deployed when natural disasters occur across the country. this will be their third deployment in the past month. >> 5:03 right now. developing overnight the death toll has gone up in mexico. more than 230 people are confirmed dead and thousands of people were injured after the powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck mexico city tuesday afternoon. right now rescue crews are focusing on saving a 12-year-old girl who is trapped in the rubble of a fallen school. 21 children, four adults were killed at that school. >> ♪

an lownessd the iranian people are waiting for an apology from president donald trump. the iranian president says he believes president trump is looking for an excuse to pull out of the nuclear agreement made back in 2015. so far president trump says he's decided how he is going to proceed on the iran nuclear deal but declines to say exactly what his decision is at this time. >> 5:04 right now. we've got new details in the ongoing russia investigation. special counsel robert mueller is now requesting white house documents. it comes as officials say president trump's former campaign chairman paul manafort offered to provide briefings on the race to a russian billionaire. some in the u.s. government considers close to russian president vladimir putin. the offer was given e-mail exchange with a former employee of his political consulting firm in july 2016. there is no evidence that shows the offer was accepted or that any briefings actually took place.

>> 5:04 right now. developing this morning a massage therapist accused of sexually assaulting a client is scheduled to appear in court today. it comes one day after fox5 learned yet another woman filed a police report against 24-year-old habtamu gebreslassie. in that case gebreslassie is accused of trying to inappropriately touch the woman during a massage session in august. this latest incident happened just days before the therapist was accused of inappropriately touching another woman in her genital area. >> maryland's comptroller peter franchot says baltimore has the best chance to bring amazon's new headquarters to the state. the port covington site in baltimore was nominated by officials last week and just this week, prince george's county put in a competing bid but franchot calls the baltimore site perfect for amazon. more than 100 jurisdictions in the u.s. and canada have expressed interest. bids are due by october 19th. >> ♪ >> 5:05 on this thursday morning. mike thomas, man, what a spectacular day we've got on

>> yeah, beautiful here but of course we're still dealing with the effects of what maria did down in puerto rico. it has completely crossed the island. still seeing some effects this morning but of course the core of the storm and the worst of the winds have moved off to the north and west. winds of 115 miles an hour this morning. this is your 5 o'clock update. still hammering the coast of the dominican republic here just to the northern coastline with lots of storm surge strong winds and heavy, heavy rain. there's the latest track. expected to turn north, awfully close past the turks and caicos later tonight and into the early morning hours tomorrow. then it continues kind of off to the north depending on how close it gets to the u.s. could throw some high surf our way maybe some coastal winds. we'll continue to watch it through the course of the week. that spin you see is josé still bringing tropical storm warnings to portions of cape cod nantucket this morning. here locally we're getting dry air on the backside which is going to keep us sunny bright and beautiful this afternoon. temperatures this morning 69 in washington. 72 though for

>> ♪ >> 5:09 right now. back in the spotlight this morning, a united nations sexual abuse and exploitation scandal involving un peace keepers. despite more than a decade of promising reforms an investigation by the associated press finds the un still fails to meet its pledges to stop the abuse or help the victims. much of the scandal is centered in the congo where more than 700 of the 2000 abuse complaints against the un were reported. >> also new this morning, a former new jersey bodega owner who won $338 million in a powerball back in 2013 has been charged with sexual assault on a minor. he's accused of

under aged girl for three years. prosecutors say it appears the girl is the only victim. if convicted that lotto winner could face 40 years in jail. >> new this morning, two people are dead, a juvenile male and a man after a police... after police say they shot and stabbed one another. this happened last night on 13th street northeast. investigators have not said what led up to this deadly altercation. >> sad news to report this morning. former world middle weight boxing champion jake lamotta has passed away at the age of 95. he died tuesday at miami area hospital from complications of pneumonia. he was the champ for nearly two years even handing sugar ray robinson the first defeat of his hall of fame career. lamotta's life was made into a film raging bull. >> celine dion back in las vegas. she resumed h her residency at the coliseum tuesday night after performing a sold out summer tour in europe. the singer told fans that

>> 5:13 is the time. here's a look at the stories we're following for you today, thursday september 21st. first up, hurricane maria continues on its path of destruction in the caribbean. next in line for the brunt of the category three storm is the

the storm is expected to make landfall today, then it will continue on a path towards the turks and caicos and the bahamas. in its wake, the deadly storm has left a path of destruction in puerto rico and dominica. >> rescue efforts in mexico continue including delicate attempts to save a girl buried in the rubble of a school that collapsed during the earthquake. 25 people including 21 children died after being trapped in the school. mexico city government says 52 people have been rescued from the remains of collapsed buildings. at least 230 people have been reported dead. >> a barricade situation is under way right now in anne arrundel county. it stems from a shooting last night in annapolis. a man and a woman were shot on medgar evers street just before 8 o'clock last night. police responded more than two hours later to the 700 block of central avenue in edgewater to look for a person of interest in the shooting. that person barricaded himself in a home there. we have a crew headed to that scene and we'll share more as we get it. >> ♪

the hour right now, live look outside. pretty pleasant out there and it looks like it's going to be a pretty good day as well. >> yeah, beautiful day here locally. today is the last full day of summer. you'll enjoy today's forecast. it's going to be the warmest day in several weeks. i have to look at the statistics on that. here's tropical tracker. tropical storm maria making her a category three on the lower end of category three. we got to get it up to 130 miles an hour for it to become a category four. not forecasted to do so. latest track out of the national hurricane center is going to mostly keep it it as a three, maybe increase tweeds s to 120. not expected to make landfall. it will still bring them a lot of wind and heavy rain and high surf as well and hurricane warnings are out this morning. going to continue its track kind of here off to the north and then eventually is expected to kind of either take a northeast turn or keep going straight north. either waylo

stay off the eastern coastline for now the way things are shaping up could still throw high surf much like josé did to north carolina and our beaches here locally. could do some surf issues there. speaking of josé, winds down to 60 miles an hour this morning. still a tropical storm expected to continue to weaken as it still kind of spins -- it's expected to briefly take a jog offer to the west as we head into the weekend and will eventually spin itself out right around this location. getting back to local weather here, summertime is ending. today is the last full day of summer. tomorrow at i think just after 4 o'clock in the afternoon, we will officially be entering fall. will not feel like it though all the way through the weekend. we got a summer-like weekend coming up. warmest week in awhile in fact. here's satellite and radar. these are the showers from josé this morning, tropical storm warning -- tropical storm warnings remain in effect for the cape cod region. we have dry air kind of moving in down the backside of josé and that's what's allowing us to clear things out, be sunny and bright and start off

neighborhoods. look at manassas this morning. 55 degrees. 65 for quantico. 69 here in the district. gaithersburg is at 62. again, it's a comfortable morning out there, too. humidity is really not all that bad. humidity will start toup tick a little as we head towards the weekend and into next week. we don't have many concerns. rain is going to stay up there far off to the north and to the east with josé and here it's going to be sunny bright and beautiful. temperatures later on this afternoon expected to be in the 80's. could we see a 90-degree reading or two? it's possible. if we did i think it would be south of d.c. today. don't expect to see any 90's here locally. 88 degrees today. fox5 accuweather 7-day forecast, fall tomorrow, 85 degrees. that weekend here doesn't feel like fall at all. 87 on saturday. up to 88 on sunday. all right, that's a check of the forecast. back to erin como for traffic now. hey, erin. >> 5:17. we do have a problem if you're waking your way from roslyn into georgetown or just heading out in northwest, keep in mind malfunctioning traffic light canal road at m street. we're seeing nice

google expects the deal to close by early 2018. >> if you drive your chrysler minivan too fast and too furious one of the second row seat belts might unbuckle. fiat-chrysler is recalling almost 50,000 pacifica vans. it covers 2017 and 18. all have the eight passenger seating option. the company says it doesn't know of any crashes or injuries from the problem. until repairs are made chrysler is advising owners not to use the second row center seat if other passengers are in that row. >> if you're thinking of landing a seasonal job at wal-mart, think again. the company says it won't be doing large scale hiring for the holidays this year. instead, it's going to offer extra work to its current employees but it will hire more people at its national distribution centers. might be a bad year for seasonal workers. a number of retail companies plan to scale back hiring. >> not an irish coffee but it might be the next best thing.

>> good morning to you. thank you very much for joining us. >> it is thursday, september 21st. >> erin como is watching the roads, mike thomas talking weather. good morning to you both. >> hey, guys, good morning. today is the last full day of summer. enjoy it. sunny and bright skies with temperatures mid to upper 80's. hey, erin. >> 5:31. we have a traffic light that's malfunctioning by the key bridge. we'll get you around that one and these westbound 66 delays. >> thank you much. 5:31 right now. let's get you caught up on the big stories. we'll start out with breaking news. a barricade situation in anne arrundel county maryland has been going on now nearly seven hours stemming from a shooting in annapolis. that's the video you're seeing on your screen right now. a man and a woman were shot on medgar evers street just before 8 o'clock last night. slightly more than two hours later, police went to a home in the 700 block of central avenue in edgewater to look for a person of interest in the shooting. that person then barricaded himself in a home there. police tell us no one else is in the home. >> also breaking overnight, we have learned two people died

northeast d.c. police tell us juvenile male and a man shot and stabbed one another last night on 13th street northeast. now, no word this morning on what led up to their deadly altercation. >> 5:32 right now. hurricane maria barreling toward the dominican republic. the storm regained strength and is now back up to a category three storm that is expected to pass near the dominican republic in the next couple hours and then get close to turks and caicos. and the bahamas tonight and tomorrow. maria ravaged puerto rico yesterday. basically the entire island has no power. flooding, mudslides major concerns there. it's still unclear about deaths or injuries on puerto rico but we do know of at least 10 deaths across other parts of the caribbean. >> meanwhile, the local elite team that responds to disasters is already lending a helping land. the fairfax county urban search and rescue team is in puerto rico. they tweeted out this video yesterday of the crew helping clear a true outside their base of opera

this story. mel. >> reporter: good morning, guys. and what is alleged in these cases is a violation in so many ways. clients have to have trust that their massage therapist is going to act in a professional manner and if these allegations are true this man certainly did not. now, the first incident was reported on september 17th. a female client called police after her appointment at the massage envy on wisconsin avenue northwest. she said the therapist inappropriately touched her and performed a sex act without her consent. 24-year-old habtamu gebreslassie was arrested and charged with first degree sexual abuse of a patient or client and second degree sexual abuse. after the news got out, another client called police to say gebreslassie did the same thing to her -- well, tried to do the same thing to her on august 28th. gebreslassie is charged with attempted first degree sexual abuse of a patient or a client and attempted second degree sexual a

now, massage envy is a national franchise with locally owned locations. in a statement, a corporate spokesperson told us massage envy does require those franchisees to complete background checks and also reference checks and also enforce what they have -- what they say is a code of conduct and a zero tolerance policy to ensure that guests have safe and professional experience. also telling us that the therapist has been fired. now, gebreslassie is scheduled to appear in d.c. court this morning around 9:30. he did say in court documents that he denied those allegations. we also tried to do a criminal background check on him and came up with nothing. live in northwest d.c., i'm melanie alnwick, fox5 local news. >> ♪ >> 5:35 is the time. time to talk weather. >> let's do a little weather. how about a little summer time as we roll into fall. >> i'll take it. >> you said this before. >> i like it.

edgewater we are tracking this ongoing breaking news, a barricade situation. a lot of police activity closing down 214 central avenue at oak lane. please use caution out there anticipate a large police presence. 270 looking pretty typical right now. unfortunately average speeds down to 23 miles per hour south of 70 in frederick. from 70 to 121, 26 minute trip in the yellow zone. leave the house about 10 minutes early. you'll need that extra time to battle that congestion. urbana pike pretty quiet. 95 headlights coming toward us on the northbound side from fredericksburg into stafford we have a little congestion and then things open up again. once you hit dale city we're seeing a little bit of congestion through woodbridge this morning. yellow zone there as well. you can see the mess of headlights. that is the northbound traffic right now. no crashes but the main lanes dale city to the beltway is going to take up 20 minutes. again a little bit of a slowdown there. about a 10 minute delay as well. taking a look at metro we don't have any metro delays to report on the rails. i'll let you know if that changes. any questions at erin fox5 d.c. on twitter. things starting to pick up. holly and whiz.

in fact, now at 5:49 we received an update on that breaking news from anne arrundel county that erin mentioned. the barricade situation that lasted nearly seven hours is now over. a suspect just taken into custody. that person had been wanted in connection with a shooting last night in annapolis. that's the video you're seeing on your screen right now. a man and a woman were shot on medgar evers street just before 8 o'clock. that suspect then engaged in a standoff with police beginning just before 11 o'clock last night. but again, the update, that suspect in custody. the barricade over. >> time right now is 5:50. the driver of a semi trailer who's truck was found eighty outsideof a texas wal-mart in jy filled with immigrants is face more charges. james bradley is facing life in prison over the death penalty. prosecutors say the indictment also states a 47-year-old man who is in the u.s. illegally transported immigrants and tried to shield them from detection. he could a

in prison or the death penalty. 10 immigrants died inside that truck. disgraced lawmaker anthony weiner could face hard time behind bars. prosecutors want the former congressman to spend two years in prison for sexting with an under aged teenager. weiner has accented a plea bargain not to appeal any sentence between 21 and twenty seven months. a new york judge will sentence weiner on monday. a maryland man free this morning after spending 13 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit. lamar johnson was wrongly convicted of gunning down a man in baltimore. despite a lack of physical evidence, he was misidentified by an informant and sentenced to life in prison. he reached out to the midatlantic innocence project, a group dedicated to exonerating people who have been wrongly convicted. the organization has been working on johnson's case for years. and this week it finally paid off. >> if you ain't got the right resources, it's hard to prove your innocence. it was at times i thought i was going to die in there. at times
